![]() However, with the heavily praised reviews from peers, I decided to try the book out despite my misgivings. ![]() Now, at the beginning of this book, I wasn’t very certain if I would enjoy it, as someone who is more of a fan of realistic fiction, or novels set in modern universes. The novel officially begins in the 1950s, introducing Lily Hu, a 17 year old Chinese born American girl living in San Francisco, California, with a passion for space. While the novel’s main premise is a Sapphic romance, it is so much more, and you will grow lost amidst the easy familiarity of Lo’s art of prose. Lo delves into the main character’s deep thoughts with so much raw emotion that I just can't help the shivers that run down my spine, or the raised hair on my arms. Even though the story’s setting is an unfamiliar one, it will still send relatable pangs through your mind. ![]() Last Night At the Telegraph Club is a haunting, heartwarming, and slow burning LGBTQ piece of literature that will both tear your heart to pieces while mending it together at the same time. If not one of the best, at least one that would cycle through my mind over and over again. ![]() Last Night At the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo might be one of the best books I have ever read. ![]() I should have set my expectations even higher. ![]()

I know that when the 'Times' hits the door, it's around 5. I know that when the traffic noise is quietest, it's about 4:30 in the morning. It's hard to measure the night by sound, but it can be done. I listen to it all, the constant, the rhythmic, and the random. ![]() ![]() I hear a constant base hum all around, the nervous system of the building, carrying electricity and gas and phone conversations to all our respective little boxes. the two short clicks in the walls before the heat comes on with a low whoosh. The plastic tarp over the table on the balcony crunching in the cold wind. The lighter swings back under the pipe undulating back and forth, inhaling the curl as it rises from the tar, exactly the same as before he hit me, only now he's staring at me, hating me.” Without letting go of the pipe, he swings his hand holding the lighter with incredible force, backhanding my face. There's no delineation between the pipe and the smoke and his body. I want to burrow inside the folds like a wind-blown dusting of snow so that each time I melt away, he seeks me out again. Gareth knew this and was going to punish Rowena's father by raping her and sending her back pregnant. This is where I'm going to step in and save you all from the endless filler and get to the gist, Rowena was the stepmother's baby but no born of Gareth's father but the knight that escaped that night. Gareth takes her to his castle where Gareth's sister Marlys hates on her, his knightly friend sort of makes plays for her, and Gareth himself sort of falls in love with her. Neither Rowena's father, her brothers (except for the youngest), or her betrothed cousin fight for her. Gareth wins Rowena from her father in a dice game. Her newborn and knight go missing, everyone blames Gareth for their deaths. Gareth's stepmother seduced him when he was a teenager, his father died, he caught stepmother in arms with another knight, got jealous, stepmother found on bedroom floor run through with a sword. ![]() ![]() ![]() No sex demon, but a hunter with the instincts of a true predator. I mean, it could be because the people the tales were about were real. Look, don’t ask me, my parents were HUGE on Greek history and mythology. ![]() Wait, we’re getting off on the wrong foot. But I guess when your power is literally fear it’s a little hard not to lean toward villainy. Unlike Peter, I didn’t learn my lesson from it, and that’s my attitude all the time. You know the scene in the first Spider-Man movie with Tobey McGuire? Where he lets the guy steal the cash from the dick who won’t give him his prize money for winning that cage match? That one. More like Peter Parker before he was Spiderman, when he committed that one selfish, petty act that led to his Uncle Ben dying. I’m not even sure I would qualify as an anti-hero. I’m not the kind of person who should have been given superpowers. This series really isn’t for the faint of heart, and yet it is still inarguably brilliant. 1 is a fantastic yet dark introduction to this series. That is all par for the course in this series however, so consider yourself warned. Not to mention some pretty gruesome injuries. The series gets pretty dark at times, with the first volume alone portraying assault, violence, and implied sexual assault.
